Project Overview
Quinshield designed, manufactured, supplied and installed a bespoke 9m GRP VFD electrical equipment building for Exolum’s Eastham site. The building included large equipment access openings, ventilation interfaces and cable transit provisions. Quinshield completed the full project within eight weeks of drawing approval.
The Requirement
InSite and Exolum required a new GRP building to house VFD electrical equipment at the Eastham facility.
The equipment required an unusually tall structure with large access openings at both ends. Each end wall therefore included double doors with a hinged transom above. Together, these provided an opening approximately 2,500mm wide x 3,500mm high.
The building also needed to accommodate ventilation ductwork and several high-level cable routes. In addition, the design needed to allow equipment installation after the enclosure was complete.
Quinshield’s Solution
Quinshield developed a bespoke panel-form GRP enclosure measuring 9,000mm long x 4,700mm deep x 4,700mm clear internal height.
The large wall panels created additional manufacturing, handling and installation challenges. However, careful planning allowed Quinshield to manage the panels efficiently throughout the project.
As a result, Quinshield completed manufacture, delivery and installation within eight weeks of drawing approval.
Designed Around Equipment Installation
Equipment access formed a key part of the design.
Quinshield incorporated large double doors, removable bottom sills and hinged transoms into both end walls. This created openings large enough for major electrical equipment to pass through after installation of the building.
Therefore, the client could erect the enclosure before installing the equipment. This provided a protected, weather-resistant working environment and helped simplify the wider project programme.
Ventilation and Cable Integration
The long side walls included large apertures for the VFD ventilation ductwork.
Quinshield also installed 11 Roxtec transit frames at high level for cable entry and exit. These features were incorporated during manufacture, which helped simplify later mechanical and electrical work on site.
Rapid Site Installation
The size of the structure required careful installation planning.
Quinshield used a 40-tonne contract crane to position the large GRP panels. Despite the scale of the building, the installation took only one and a half days.
As a result, the work caused minimal disruption to the wider site programme.
Outcome
Quinshield delivered the complete bespoke VFD equipment building within eight weeks of drawing approval.
The building combined large equipment access openings, ventilation provisions and high-level cable transit frames. It also demonstrated Quinshield’s ability to deliver large, technically complex GRP structures within demanding programmes.
