Long-Term GRP Framework Supply for Northern Gas Networks

Gas

Project Overview

Quinshield has supplied GRP products to Northern Gas Networks and its predecessor organisations for over ten years, supporting operational gas infrastructure sites across the region.

This long-term supply relationship has included GRP governor and regulator buildings, control and E&I buildings, boiler houses, generator housings, roofs, doors, frames and associated items. In 2012, Quinshield was awarded a framework supplier contract for GRP kiosks, roofs, doors, frames and related products.

The Requirement

Northern Gas Networks required a reliable GRP supplier capable of supporting a wide range of gas infrastructure projects across multiple sites.

Each site had different requirements depending on the scope of work, access restrictions, planning conditions and the type of equipment being housed.

Quinshield needed to provide flexible GRP solutions that could meet specification requirements while supporting supply, delivery and installation where required

Quinshields Solution

Quinshield supplied a wide range of GRP products, including governor and regulator buildings, control and E&I buildings, boiler houses, generator housings, kiosks, roofs, doors, frames and associated items.

Depending on the project, Quinshield provided supply only, supply and delivery, or full supply, delivery and installation.

Where required, Quinshield also carried out site surveys to check access, take measurements, photograph existing structures and agree installation requirements with Northern Gas Networks, site engineers and civil contractors.

Technical and Site Support

Quinshield worked to the relevant gas industry specification for governor, regulator and meter housings. Where required, the company also provided structural calculations and explosion relief calculations for inclusion within design proposals.

Site surveys played an important role in more complex projects. They helped ensure accurate design, smooth manufacture, safe delivery and efficient installation.

This approach allowed Quinshield to support projects with different access conditions, lifting requirements, planning stipulations and site-specific constraints.

Cowpen Bewley AGI, Billingham

At Cowpen Bewley AGI, Quinshield supplied two GRP door and frame sets with integrated ventilation panels.

This project required accurate site measurement before manufacture. Quinshield visited site to record detailed dimensions, take photographs and check how the new GRP doors and frames would integrate with the existing structure.

By completing this survey before production, Quinshield was able to manufacture the door and frame sets to suit the site conditions and install them efficiently once delivered. This approach reduced the risk of fitting issues and helped ensure the replacement GRP components were right first time.

Eltringham AGI, Northumberland

The Eltringham AGI project involved the supply and installation of a GRP regulator building measuring approximately 7000mm x 4000mm x 2600mm clear internal height.

Due to restricted access on site, Quinshield manufactured the building in panel form rather than as a single complete unit. This allowed the building to be transported and assembled more effectively within the available space.

Before installation, Quinshield’s site supervisor visited the site to agree the installation method with the main contractor. The building was then installed by Quinshield’s site team using the Hiab facility on a small fixed-bed lorry, helping overcome the access restrictions while keeping the installation controlled and efficient.

Cummersdale AGI, Carlisle

At Cummersdale AGI, Quinshield supplied a large GRP regulator building measuring approximately 11000mm x 5250mm x 2750mm clear internal height.

The scale of the building required careful installation planning. Quinshield completed a site survey so that a lifting plan could be prepared, alongside the method statement and risk assessment required for the works.

The building was manufactured in panel form and installed on site using a 35-tonne crane supplied by a local crane company. Quinshield also supplied an E&I building for the same site, demonstrating the company’s ability to deliver multiple GRP building requirements within one project location.

The Outcome

Quinshield developed a strong working relationship with Northern Gas Networks by providing reliable GRP products, responsive technical support and flexible delivery options across multiple sites.

The framework relationship demonstrated Quinshield’s ability to support utility infrastructure projects from initial survey through to design, manufacture, delivery and installation.

By combining product knowledge, site coordination and installation experience, Quinshield helped deliver GRP solutions tailored to the needs of each project.
