Nuclear Containment Systems

Nuclear Containment Systems

Our core strength is to achieve cost effective solutions for Clients, working closely and understanding their challenges. Our Structures can be implemented as a re usable system to keep contaminants out or to keep contaminants enclosed . If necessary, a pliable and strippable coating can be applied to the high gloss wipeable GRP surface in order to tie down dust contaminants. A final tie down coat can then help safe disposal and minimise secondary waste.

Typical features and options include:

  • Ports for material postings and handling
    Windows for viewing
  • Bunded base for wet operations
  • Double or single doors hinged either left or right and can be inward or outward opening
  • Suitable lifting provision
    Lighting
  • Vent apertures to enable extraction ventilation and necessary filtration
  • Entirely weather proof and suitable for outdoor use
  • Smooth Gloss surface finish to facilitate decontamination

After extensive consultation and rigourous testing, we were instructed to design and manufacture the first of our new, approved range of glass-reinforced plastic nuclear containment systems to BNFL Trawsfynydd in the form of GRP pond covers.

Their purpose is to effectively contain contaminated dust from the interior of the ponds as the first layers of concrete are mechanically removed and extracted . The GRP covers and methodology is now an approved system. Its effectiveness can be applied to all pond containment and other decommissioning requirements as a solution.

Trawsfynydd

The speed of construction together with the excellent strength to weight ratio and ease of cleaning brought us to the attention of those at Trawsfynydd who where looking to enclose the pond area while clearing the contaminated surface material away. In addition our structure was also required to support the camera, ventilation and vacuum systems while also maintaining access for the installation of the Brokk machinery.

After a few brain-storming sessions the final configuration also allowed the pond covers to be erected adjacent to the ponds to reduce time over the ponds. The the modular containment system reaching 100 meters in length and 4.5 meters wide was then slid into position using a track and pulley arrangement.

Glass Reinforced Plastic Technology

Our enclosures are designed and manufactured utilising composite glass reinforced polyester (GRP) technology, which not only gives an aesthetically pleasing appearance capable of producing the gloss finish normally associated with GRP, but has the added benefit of being maintenance free over its expected life span of 40+ years.

Being impervious to all weathers and corrosion resistant these products can be used in the harshest of environments, as proven in the boating world where the same construction is used.

Delivering the enclosures ready built to site, pre-fitted with electrics is the ideal way to reduce the noise; dust and general disruption experienced with conventional building systems.

The speed of installation normally one day for a ready built enclosure and no more than a week for a larger panel form construction, keeps site time and costs to a minimum.
